Basics of Sterile Processing for Medical Offices Part 2:  Prep, Sterilization, and Sterile Storage

Course Description: This course will discuss the prep area where clean decontaminated instruments are inspected, assembled into trays/sets and then wrapped or packaged for sterilization. The presenter will discuss the materials such as chemical indicators, tape, tip protectors, peel pouches, and sterile wraps as they relate to sterilization.  The presentation will identify how to assemble one-time use packaging of instruments as well as peel pouches and wrapped items. Finally, the sterilization process will be discussed.

Target Audience: Nurses and all Clinical Staff who work with sterilization and decontamination of instruments

Learning Outcomes:  After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

•Discuss the  prep area including PPE, room layout, the significance of temperature and humidity.
•Discuss the materials including chemical indicators, tape, tip protectors, peel pouches and sterile wrap.
•Demonstrate the appropriate assembling of a one-time use packaging.
•Define sterilization, the importance of sterilization, and the use of various types of sterilization.
•Describe the storage area, environmental parameters, maintenance of sterility, and the environment of care.

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will receive 1.5 nursing continuing professional development hours.
