Course Description: This course will provide healthcare professionals with basic understanding about the HIPAA rules and regulations.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • state the reason for the HIPAA rule.
  • discuss the proper method for releasing PHI.
  • list the penalties for violation of HIPAA.

Length of Course: 30 minutes

Credit Statements:

Licensed Nurses:  Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this program, attendees will receive 0.5 nursing continuing professional development hours.

Respiratory Care Practitioners: 0.5 clock hours will be awarded by Upstate AHEC, an approved provider of continuing education for respiratory care practitioners by the SC Board of Medical Examiners.

Social Workers:This program has been approved by Upstate AHEC, as part of the SC AHEC system, under its accreditation by the SC Board of Social Work Examiners for0.50 clock hours of non-social work continuing education.

Counselors and Therapists: This program has been approved for 0.5 hours of continuing education by SC AHEC under its accreditation by the SC Board of Examiners for Licensed Professional Counselors, Marital and Family Therapists and Psycho-Educational Specialists.

Dietitians: 0.50 hours of CPE for registered dietitians.

Others:This program is approved for 0.050 CEUs (0.5 clock hours) by Upstate AHEC and meets the SC AHEC Best Practice Standards.
