Course Description: This presentation provides an overview of dental care for individuals with special health care needs. The presentation will discuss dental and oral development, the etiology and complications associated with the dental caries process, anticipatory guidance, and common oral conditions in children with special health care needs.

Instructional Method: Asynchronous online PowerPoint® lecture, Pre-Test, Post-Test and Evaluation

To pass this course you must view the lecture, complete the pre-test and evaluation and score at least 80% on the post-test.

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe normal tooth development.

  • Identify causes, complications and prevention strategies of the dental caries process.

  • Discuss the oral conditions, barriers to oral healthcare and caries risk in children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN).

  • Identify how to perform an oral health examination, implement a preventive program and suggest techniques for optimizing oral care in CSHCN.
