Course Description: This course will provide participants with the skills to de-escalate situations with dementia and Alzheimer's patients.

Target Audience:  Nursing, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, and other interested healthcare providers

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

1.  Define dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and stages.

2.  List  4 Step Approach to Managing Behavioral Disturbances.

3.  Describe the role of the  Progressive Lowered Stress Threshold Model (PLST).

4.  Identify triggers that may escalate dementia and Alzheimer’s patients.

5.  Recognize and describe behaviors of an escalated patient.

6.  Define catastrophic reactions and how to manage them.

7.  Discuss interventions to deal with behavioral disturbances.

8.  Identify de-escalation techniques to use with patients who become escalated.

9.  Identify what will occur if the intervention goes wrong.
