Course Description: As an increasing number of patients seek treatment for obesity, it is vial for healthcare providers to be able to offer evidence-based recommendations. this course will teach the healthcare provider how to provide the best practice standards whether you are starting the conversation about weight loss treatment options, reinforcing lifestyle recommendations, or providing long-term supportive care for patients with a history of bariatric surgery.

Target Audience: Licensed nurses, social workers, respiratory therapists, dieticians and any other healthcare provider interested in this topic
Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss strategies to communicate with patients about obesity.
- Identify steps to support the patient who is interested in pursuing bariatric surgery.
- Interpret the lifestyle recommendations for patients who have bariatric surgery.
- Outline long term supportive care for patients who have undergone bariatric surgery.
Length of Course: 165 minutes
Licensed Nurses: Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
This continuing education activity is approved for 2.75 nursing continuing professional development hour for licensed nurses and 1.25 pharmacology hour.
Dietitians: 2.75 hours of CPE for registered dietitians.
Social Workers: This program has been approved for 2.75 clock hours of non-social work continuing education by Upstate AHEC, as part of the SC AHEC system, under its accreditation by the SC Board of Social Work Examiners.
Respiratory Care Practitioners: 2.75 clock hours will be awarded by Upstate AHEC, an approved provider of continuing education for respiratory care practitioners by the SC Board of Medical Examiners.
